VMware's Cloud VDC-OS a "groping in the dark" stint?

Timothy really wrote a cool post. Since Ashlee has left The Register, you just don't come across a well written post. I am by no means saying that Ashlee wrote any meaningful stuff (Its a joke, Ashlee) but he did make us all smile. Heck its really cloudy out there, it doesn't make any sense and a lot of vaporware might float. Amazon is probably the only one that is seriously building a business around it. Google is beginning to work hard with Gear, AppEngine and a lot of other smaller vendors like 3Tera, ParaScale, FlexiScale are doing a great job there. Anyways here's what Timothy has to say about VMware's stint at Cloud Computing: Whenever I see such announcements, I never see anyone say this: Our product is not just about managing Linux and Windows, whether physical or virtual. But rather managing all kinds of servers in the installed base, and that includes AS/4... (more)

Cloud Computing Public or Private? How to Choose Cloud Storage

Cloud storage is a relatively new concept that is becoming a more recognizable term in industry vernacular. Originally delivered as a service, it gained early popularity with Web 2.0 startups looking to outsource storage administration. As the concept spread and offerings expanded, the industry has now embraced two flavors of cloud storage: public and private. This article reviews the choices a user faces when choosing a private versus public cloud storage offering. It describes data types and identifies scenarios where cloud storage is a good solution and where it is a poor fit. This article also covers usage patterns, security, performance and cost implications to educate the reader on differences between public and private cloud storage. Public Versus Private, What Is the Difference? The difference between private and public storage clouds is simple. Where is th... (more)

1st International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo: Observations

The ParaScale Blog Last week the masses converged on San Jose for the SYS-CON convention that covered SOA, Virtualization and Cloud Computing. The event spanned three days and was very well attended. I was surprised at how crowded the sessions were given the state of the economy these days. That is until I headed over to the SOA side of the conference. Granted the rooms were bigger but the SOA audiences were sparse. People love a trend and Cloud Computing is no exception. I managed to catch a couple of interesting presentations on the cloud computing side that were standing room only. The Rightscale CTO gave a good presentation and I finally understand what they do (think a dashboard and automation for cloud computing installations). There were lots of good hallway conversations and the audiences were eager to ask questions and learn more about Clouds. Consistently ... (more)

ParaScale CEO Sees Storage Moving Increasingly to the Cloud

Cloud computing is grabbing headlines as more and more enterprises are turning to this emerging technology as a way to enable flexible computing power over the Internet. In 2008, many companies were wary of the risks and vulnerabilities of participating in the cloud computing model, and although the buzz was high, adoption was feathered. "This all changes in 2009," said Sajai Krishnan, CEO of cloud storage start-up ParaScale.  "The economic downturn and the addition of private cloud solutions to complement public offerings are creating an environment that enables incremental adoption of cloud storage on a very broad scale." In discussions with end users, ParaScale has found that the overwhelming majority indicate they are considering both public and private cloud storage. Storage Clouds are Attractive for Many Companies Krishnan identifies several considerations drivi... (more)
